How Can Author Coaching Help You?

Cathy SultanThe Syrian, A Beirut Heart, Israeli and Palestinian Voices & Tragedy in South Lebanon

My AuthorScope coach has been advising and teaching me for a number of years. Under his guidance, I've published four books with a fifth in its first draft stage. It's frankly the best investment I've ever made in my writing career.

Top Athletes Use Coaches.

Athletes, CEOs, musicians, doctors, even actors, all share a common behavior. The ones who are serious about getting better at what they do and new trends, techniques and standards all work with coaches for personal improvement. They may call their coaches trainers,  instructors, consultants or coaches, but these professionals recognize that they can never know enough, have the highest level of skills, or stay motivated and organized enough to be successful unless they work with a coach.

Why Not Authors?

Award-winning and bestselling authors are no exception. Authors should all ask themselves if they have the honed craftsmanship to stand up against the best novelists, memoirists and nonfiction authors in the marketplace. The good news is that authors who have some things to learn about writing and the discipline of being an author can learn what they need to know and develop the behaviors of success. We call this process Author Coaching. And we think every author needs it.

What Is Craft Coaching?

Craft coaching for authors is personalized mentoring and instruction on how to improve your book manuscript. It is a series of one-to-one consultations about topics of highest interest to you, or greatest need. How does craft coaching differ from manuscript editing? The focus of coaching is the development of an author’s writing skills. The focus of editing is strictly on improving a specific manuscript.

The result of craft coaching for authors is two-fold:

  • A better writer.
  • A better, more publishable book

All suggestions by your line editor are made by inserting Comments into your MS Word manuscript and using Track Changes for suggested edits to your text. Using  MS Word Review controls, you have the option of accepting or rejecting each suggestion.

The wisdom and expertise of my AuthorScope coach really helped to improve my writing skills as he mentored me on the more complex issues of the English language and proper structure of my manuscript. Today I am unrecognizable as the author I was a short time ago.

For serious authors, writing is much more than craftsmanship. It can be a career choice—or at least a step in that direction. Beyond bringing your craft up to the level of your ambition, you may have a need for professional guidance in such important areas as:

  • Clarifying your author goals and vision
  • Creating a plan to achieve your goals
  • Learning to be accountable for your own success
  • Achieving balance between your writing and your life
  • Overcoming fears and disappointments (bad reviews, rejection notices, etc.)
  • Collaborating effectively with others
  • Meeting your personal writing deadlines
  • Establishing and nurturing your own author brand
  • Preparing for book signings and public speaking engagements
  • Stimulating and enhancing your creativity
  • Conquering writer’s block
  • Making good business decisions
  • Navigating the publishing industry

An author career coach isn’t a consultant who provides expert advice, but an expert who provides the framework, questions, exercises and accountability for you to make positive decisions and changes.

If you are ready to focus on yourself, rather than just on your writing, and nurture your personal development, AuthorScope may be right for you. If you are ready to get unstuck in your author career or career-to-be, and let go of limiting self-beliefs and negative self-talk, give author career coaching a try.
